If your answer is “No”, how did you find this page?!
In Japan, we have many kinds of traditional art.
Nihon-ga , Japanese style painting.
Ukiyo-e , Japanese woodblock prints.
SUMI-e, Japanese ink painting.
We call it Suiboku-ga.
Suiboku-ga is one type of SUMI-e and it is hard to remember, so we use the word “SUMI-e” all over the world.
Actually SUMI-e goes back about 800years to the Kamakura period.
During that time, many Japanese monks went to China to study Zen, one type of Buddhism.
They also studied Chinese ink paintings ,we called Zen-ga, as part of their study of Zen.
Speaking of Zen-ga, there is a famous painting of the founder, Dharma.
The painting is called “Dharma-zu”.
The techniques of ink painting in Japan flowed from China, but because of Japan’s unique moral and cultural perspectives, we took a different path from Chinese ink paintings.
However ,both styles emphasized the learning the art of living from the nature scenery, flowers, and animals.
Yes, this means nature can teach you everything that you need if you pay attention to it!
